The BRAKE BURNER is a New Zealand first, lift-accessed endurance mountain bike race. Best described as a Super D* race on steroids, the Brake Burner is designed for the recreational rider that rides a full suspension mountain bike. The 4.5km mostly downhill trail is fast, flowing, single track offering some technical challenges as well as some pedalling and uphill. This inaugural event will take place on Feb 3, 2007 at Coronet Peak, 20 minutes drive from Queenstown.
The Brake Burner is the brainchild of Greg McIntyre, owner of leading guided mountain bike adventure company – Fat Tyre Adventures. He says, “It’s a brilliant opportunity for any recreational rider to experience the thrill and challenge of a cross country downhill endurance race. It’s effectively a gravity-assisted race with the aid of a chair lift. The race will appeal to trail riders as much as hard core racers and is ideal for an all-mountain trail bike (but any will do)”.
All riders will race against the clock to ride as many laps as possible in six hours. Open to teams and individual riders, entrants can expect to descend up to 10,000 vertical metres of downhill over the event. Anyone can be a winner with over $10,000 of prizes up for grabs on the day.
