Scaling new heights at the Wanaka Mountain Film Festival Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 May 2007
Scaling new heights at the Wanaka Mountain Film FestivalA gripping dyno competition during this year’s Wanaka Mountain Film Festival hopes to see contestants leap in to the world records book.

The tough challenge has been set for competitors to reach heights well above their own body length. Strong upper body strength is required for this sport as well as a good dynamic leap.

Competitors will hang from two holds plugged in to the wall and leap up to catch holds set at a higher height and progressively raised for each round. There are no safety ropes just soft crash pads to protect their fall. It’s an exciting and fun event for the whole family to watch.

On the same day at BaseCamp the festival will stage a slack line and speed climb challenge. A tensioned wire will be set up one metre off the ground, for competitors to test their balance and calm as they move from one end to the other. The speed climb competition will test pace and accuracy as they ascend to the top.

Climbing action can also be witnessed the weekend before (30 June-1 July), when Wanaka hosts the third round of the National Rock Climbing Championships, also at BaseCamp. Part of the national cup series, junior, open and master climbers are challenged on set routes which becomes more challenging the higher they travel. New Zealand’s best sport climbers are expected to attend and exhibit great climbing skill and ability.

Entry for the dyno competition is now open and costs just $5. All entrants will be in to win the spot prize of a days skiing with Harris Mountain Heli-skiing. For the slack line and speed climb competitions, registration will also be $5 on the day.

The current dyno world record for women stands at 2.175 metres and the New Zealand men’s record is 2.7m, held by Stefan Hadfield. The competition will be staged at BaseCamp in Wanaka on Saturday July 7. The heats will be held in the morning with the finals and world record attempt in the afternoon.

The festival also features speaker platforms with mountaineers such as Mark Inglis sharing their stories and experiences, an awards night, which includes a charity auction and live music, a world record ‘dyno’ attempt and film workshops.

Wanaka Mountain Film Festival runs from 5th to 8th July. For more information see www.mountainfilm.net.nz
