Queens of all shapes, sizes and degrees of body hair ruled the day during the Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival's Downtown Day today.
Eleven Queenstown businessmen threw respectability to the wind for the annual Q92 The Breeze Festival Drag Race.
Dressed in lurid combinations of mainly pink and red, with a fair smattering of black leather and fishnets, they minced onto the festival stage in Queenstown's Earnslaw Park, egged on by Kiwi comedy icons the Topp Twins.
Dubbed with names such as Fanny Freefall, Ginger Rogerswell, and Sonya Downonya, they threw themselves around a (mercifully) short obstacle course in three heats, stilettos flying, wigs askew and without a shred of decency among them.
Tokyo Tamer (Richard Thomas), Irene Swallow (Howard Nossiter) and Alberta Lovelace (Albert Voschezang) made it through to the finals, then it was every wo(man) for him or herself. Last year's winner Irene Swallow came to grief after a hard shove from one of her competitors half way around the course, paving the way for Alberta Lovelace, in slinky red dress and heels, to take line honours and the overall title.
Paulette Pulsealot (Paul Miller) won the Miss Photogenic title, the title of Miss Friendly went to Destination Queenstown's own David Kennedy (as Brandy, complete with bunny ears and tail), Fanny Freefall (aka Ben Chapman) was crowned Miss Personality, while the Best Dressed title went to Madame Lash, otherwise known as Simon Smith in full bondage gear.
Earlier four Top Blokes teams entertained the lunchtime crowd in the Hell Pizza Toss, run in Fear Factor style.
Teams had to complete a number of challenges, all with pizza in hand, including an AJ Hackett Horizontal Bungy, target discuss throwing with a Hell pizza, and a superslide, artfully tossing their Hell pizza to a teammate en route.
The festival continues tomorrow (Thursday June 28) with the hilarious Speight's Dog Derby at Coronet Peak from 12.30pm, where local shepherds and their dogs take a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain and slip, slide and race their way back down again.
The dogs get another chance to shine in the Speight's Dog Barking at the Queenstown Village Green at 4pm, while evening entertainment includes the Skyline High School Murder Mystery at Skyline Gondola and Restaurant, and the second sell-out Lindauer Laugh Fest event the Boys Night Out, starring Jeremy Corbett, Jeremy Elwood, Dai Henwood and Te Radar at SKYCITY Queenstown Casino.
The Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival is the Southern Hemisphere's ultimate winter celebration and runs from June 22 to July 1.
