In truly ironic fashion, one of the great distance holes at the Queenstown Gardens frisbee golf course, affectionately known as 'Windy Way', is now only playable when in fact it's windy. I'll tell you why inside this edition. Also, we look at what made headlines last week, announce the winner of our new weekly poll, and detail our newest section on the site - 'Opinion'.
After the removal of the great pine trees that once lined that particular section of Queenstown's Frisbee Golf course, 'Windy Way' has become one of Queenstown's newest tanning locations, when it's not windy. But when it is in fact windy, this hole certainly lives up to its name. Frisbee golfers must remember that we do not have the right of way on the course, so when people are tanning on this hole, we must either skip the hole, or send down someone to guard them in case a frisbee comes too close. James Smithells has been doing a great job of putting up hole information on the tee markers, so please, for the sake of keeping the course, don't run the risk of injuring people with reckless play.
Already running behind, and seemingly now Queenstown's newest carpark, the Queenstown Gardens Skate Park continues to be an embarrassment for the area. As you can see from the photo below, all that has been accomplished so far is the almost complete destruction of what skatepark we originally had, and some extra carparking space. According to the QLDC press release that we received in last August, I quote the following:
"We are hoping that the new skate park will be open by Christmas," Mr Engelke said.
To recap, all that has happened so far is the destruction of the heavily used park, the creation of additional parking, and a sign that states that the park is 'scheduled' for completion in Easter 2008. Heads would roll if I had my say.
Speaking of having my say, we now officially invite all visitors to the site to express yourself in our newest section, Opinion. To get the ball rolling, the boss has submitted the first opinion, taking aim at the massive Bill Boards that can be seen when entering Queenstown and Arrowtown. We will pay you $25 if we think your opinion deserves publishing.
Last week, Queenstown Icon, the Night'n Day store, was destroyed by the fire that ravaged the upstairs accommodation and the neighbouring Opal Centre. Let's hope that it's back up and running for what will be the shops busiest time of between 4 - 4.30am when all the bars and clubs are forced to shut at 4am. It might be a good idea to hire some security as well, cause there will be issues due to the mass exodus of people on the streets at the same time.
Also making news last week are the following press releases:
And lastly, before I head off, congratulations to smiley_nz, one of our 400+ registered users, for winning the first cocktail voucher from Barup for correctly answering last week's poll question, "Mashing up a drink, what would you use?". The correct answer was a 'Muddler'. Smiley_nz, if you are reading this, then pop down to the Queenstown.com Office on 46 Robins Rd to collect your voucher. For those that can't find the poll, it lives on the Our town page. Also up for grabs is a $50 Tardis bartab for those that place a free classified before Tuesday the 26th of November.
Thats it from the editors desk this week, so take care all, and enjoy the wonderful weather.
