Consultation on a document that will shape access in and around Queenstown will draw to a close on Friday, Queenstown Lakes District Council transportation planning manager Denis Mander said.

The council put the study out for public consultation in early June, held a drop-in session earlier this month, widely circulated a discussion document and an Inner Links brochure. To date 30 submissions had been received.

The objectives of the study are:

• To bring traffic into the town centre without compromising a safe vibrant and social commercial centre;
• To allow through-traffic to avoid the town centre;
• To provide access to existing and planned carparks;
• To act as an arterial route, but to be an urban street and not an expressway;
• To support public transport.

"Our options are quite simple, we can do the minimum, we can upgrade the existing route or we can develop a Melbourne to One Mile Link via some or all of Melbourne Street, Henry Street, Man Street and Thompson Street," Mr Mander said.

He considered the public response to be relatively low key, given the extent of consultation and the importance of the issue. "That possibly reflects the lack of alternative options and general support for what needs to be done," Mr Mander said.

Meanwhile consultation on proposed changes to central Arrowtown Parking would also close on Friday. Information brochures were available at the Arrowtown Library.

Feedback on both issues can be received until 5pm on Friday (25 July).
