Will Queenstown suffer as a resort if...? 2007/03/05 10:19 Karma: 8
Will Queenstown suffer as a resort if the new drinking laws are passed?

I got in trouble the last time I commented on this issue publicly. I mentioned my views in this editorial. As much as the views were my own, I have to remember that what I say in here can be taken as the views of Queenstown.com as a whole, which isn't the case.

But in a nutshell, I vote yes.

Why should the many be punished for the acts of the few? After spending 7 years in the hospitality industry I can see of no real reason why Queenstown should have a blanket closing time. Do the public want the problems we had back in the day of the 2 am closing time , noise control call outs in public residence, fights over taxis, and at the food stands. Ok, so i don't know what the exact statistics are, but from what i have seen as a long term local there have been less problems with the 24 hr licensing than blanket closing. Apart from the few.

The thing to think about though, is this because of our liquor licensing laws, or because of the socio economic groups that these few where living in before comming to Queenstown?

Well I didn't see Mr Cop, Detective Bartlet bring any statistics to the table when he blamed everything on gangs. These gangs are most likely only here after him and his associates have gone through an yanked out all the local cannabis supply. Maybe that is what we should be debating here? Who else has the facility to fill the gap in the market??

In a nutshell, the cops in this town are lazy, and like most other people in power, they have a big head, want to do minimal work, etc.

Goodnight.

I am tired of this town and QTLD being run/bullied by bar owners in this town. We the rate players are the one suffering from the crime and drunken peeing and fighting and driving. Only thing you have to do is to look at the stats. Also there are other resort towns around the world where they shut down the bars and other alcahol serving places by 2am and there is no job loss or suffering. This is the same arguments they used before the smoking ban in the public places and it has proven no effect around the world. Speak up queenstown residents against this bullying by the bar owners. Next they will want to lower the drinking age or raise legal alcahol level...etc...I rather see people drink after 2am drink at home and don't threaten our town and other peace loving people in this town. Thanks..

Funny you mention statistics, is that why you voted no, 27 times? Please don't abuse the poll, otherwise we'll make people register in order to vote.

It's funny how the few ruin it for the many, isn't it? How many parallels can we draw on that one saying?

All you have to do is look at the local papers such as mtn scene and read the crime column... I know you get most of your funding from local bar owners and how many times do these bar owners vote. Look at the meeting w/ QTLD They filled the room to pressured them into not changing the laws... I will challenge you to look at last 6 mos of crime column and add up the incidents by drunk travels in this town and you will see. So you want to ignore the stats and ignore the world where most resorts shut down the drinking establishment by 2 or 3 am... and destroy this beautiful place we call home...

I know you get most of your funding from local bar owners

To date, we have receive $0 for bar owners.

Allow me to repeat this fact: $0

As for the voters, you alone account for 50% of the vote, so on both those points, you have no case, and appear rather foolish, to say the least.

Again, you lack stats. Count the total amount of people go out and drink, and then count how many people in total get in trouble, I'd put money on it that the figure would be less than 1%.

So the majority of resorts close their bars at 2am? Prove it.

u r really a moron.
you don't look at how many people drink you look at how many people are arrested drunk etc... from total arrest and the jails were built by tax payers money not to keep drunks and fighting people but real criminals... it seems police is busy keeping these drunks out of trouble.

Funny you use 'older resident' as your nickname. You must also have Alzheimer's because you can't even remember what point you're arguing.

So I'm a moron huh? Why is that?

  • Because I exposed your poll voting fraud?

  • Because I proved you wrong about where we get our funding?

  • Because I called for you to back up your false statements?

  • Because I can debate the points you raise with absolute ease?

  • Because I know the difference between QLDLA and QTLD?

  • Because I know how to spell and use correct grammar?

If that's how you qualify a moron, then you're an idiot.

You obviously have something against alcohol, and you are entitled to have that opinion. All I've said is that I disagree with the intentions of a blanket closing time, and have tried to start some intelligent debate.

Make up your mind what you are trying to accomplish here, because I'm not the one who comes across looking like an idiot, you are.
