Upgrade of Queenstown Gardens path set to start

Work on a $250,000 upgrade of a main pathway through the Queenstown Gardens is set to start in the second week of May.

"The path from the Park Street gate to the glasshouses is in pretty poor condition. We were especially worried about the trip hazard caused by tree roots breaking the seal," Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said.

The new path would be constructed from crushed lime aggregate and would feature a new edging of Timaru blue stone. The improvements also included a slight realignment.

"Resealing the path with asphalt wasn't an option as tree roots can easily break the seal and we're back to square one. The crushed lime aggregate is much stronger, reducing the chance of future pedestrian hazards," Mr Bailey said.

"It's also much more aesthetically pleasing,' he said.

The path upgrade formed part of a major long-term beautification programme for the Gardens which was consulted on last year. Plans were available from the council website – www.qldc.govt.nz

The work would be undertaken by Morgan Pollard Associates and was due to be complete by July/August, weather permitting.

Spokesperson, Wakatipu Environmental Society

Development of the Gardens has been done in a piecemeal way for years now. No new development should be undertaken in the Queenstown Gardens until an urgent and overdue review of the Gardens Management Plan has been completed and implemented in consultation with the public.
um, ok then

Wow, did you hear that everyone? A spokesperson from the Wakatipu Environmental Society has come out and said that the shitty path that we currently have, should be left in that state until a new plan is made to cater for the gardens - and I'd bet that the 'new' plan would say the same thing: The path is dangerous, needs to be replaced, and is an embarrassment to the gardens.

This kind of bureaucracy is not pro-active, and highly detrimental to not only the image of the gardens, but the image of the Wakatipu Environmental Society.

Until then, break a leg.... or an ankle. smilies/wink.gif

You both have good points, although captain, you're a bit rough at the best of times. Karen, that comment would have been better suited to the topic of the moment, that being the planned depot. This weeks poll question asks whether the depot should be built in the gardens, and can be found on the Queenstown.com Our Town page.
