Five unhurried days for two — cellar doors and long lunches in the Gibbston Valley, boutique dinners, a lake cruise, hot pools and a spa. Romance at Queenstown's gentler pace, with just enough scenery to earn the next glass.

Quick decisions

Stay here

A boutique hotel in town, or historic Arrowtown for a quieter, prettier base near the wineries.

Book ahead

Book Amisfield and other signature tables, and any spa or hot-pool sessions.

Best if

Best for couples who travel on their stomachs and want to slow down.

Swap if

Rainy day? Swap a vineyard for a cooking class or a long spa afternoon.

Map & route

Base in town or Arrowtown; the Gibbston wineries are 20–30 minutes east, Arrowtown's restaurants a short hop, and the lake and hot pools are right in town.

Day by day

Day 1

Settle & savour

Arrive and ease into it.

Morning. Check into a boutique stay; coffee and a wander.

Afternoon. Lakeside stroll and a glass at a wine bar.

Evening. Dinner at Botswana Butchery or a waterfront table.

Stay. Boutique hotel in town or Arrowtown.

Swap: Tired from travel? Keep it to a wine bar and an early night.

Day 2

Gibbston cellar doors

The Valley of the Vines.

Morning. Guided wine tour through Gibbston — pinot noir country.

Afternoon. Long lunch at Amisfield or Kinross.

Evening. Quiet dinner; a nightcap.

Swap: Prefer to self-pace? Cycle the Gibbston River Wine Trail between cellar doors.

Day 3

Lake & wellness

Water and warmth.

Morning. Morning cruise on Lake Wakatipu, or a lakeside walk.

Afternoon. Onsen Hot Pools overlooking the Shotover, then a spa treatment.

Evening. Romantic dinner in town.

Swap: Want more wine? Swap the cruise for a second, smaller-producer tasting.

Day 4

Arrowtown day

History, art and good food.

Morning. Explore Arrowtown — the gold-rush street, galleries and the Chinese settlement.

Afternoon. Long lunch at The Winery or a local restaurant; riverside walk.

Evening. Dinner back in town, or stay out in Arrowtown.

Swap: Keen cooks? Swap the walk for a hands-on cooking or cheese-making class.

Day 5

One last long lunch

Toast the trip.

Morning. Slow breakfast; a final browse or gondola-top view.

Afternoon. A farewell long lunch, then to the airport.

Evening. Depart.

Swap: Later flight? Add a final tasting at a town cellar door.

Where to stay

Boutique hotels cluster in and above town; Arrowtown offers characterful, quieter stays near the wineries. See the accommodation page.

Getting around

Use wine-tour transport so you can both enjoy the tastings; buses reach Arrowtown, and town is walkable. Drive only if you want to self-pace the vineyards (with a designated driver). See the Getting Around guide.

Getting around guide

What to book first

Signature restaurants and spa/hot-pool sessions first; wine tours next. Autumn (Mar–May) is especially beautiful and better value.

Cost guide

Indicative per person: wine tour NZ$150–250, degustation NZ$120–200, hot pools NZ$45–90, spa treatments from NZ$120. Prices change — check providers.

Variations

Cheaper: Cycle the wine trail, pick two cellar doors, and mix boutique dinners with casual lunches.

Luxe: Private wine tour, a lakefront suite, and a chef's-table degustation.

Autumn: Time it for the vine colour and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival.

+wellness: Add a second spa day and a yoga session by the lake.

FAQ

Should we hire a car for the wineries?

It's easier (and safer) to take a wine tour or use transport so you can both taste. A car helps only if you self-pace with a sober driver.

When's the best time for food and wine?

Autumn (Mar–May) is glorious — golden vines, the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, and shoulder-season rates — but the cellar doors and restaurants shine year-round.
