Five days built around Queenstown's two home mountains — Coronet Peak and The Remarkables — with a rest-day option and après in town. Watch the snow report and webcams and flex your days to the conditions.
Quick decisions
Stay here
Stay central for après and ski-bus pick-ups, or in Frankton for value and quick mountain access.
Book ahead
Book lift passes, rentals and ski transport ahead in peak weeks; add a lesson early if you're progressing.
Best if
Best if you want real time on snow across both fields with town nights in between.
Swap if
Storm day? Swap a mountain day for a spa, a gondola lunch, or a Coronet night-ski session.
Map & route
Coronet Peak (~25 min) and The Remarkables (~45 min up the access road) are both day-trips from town. Ski buses run from central pick-ups; a car adds flexibility but isn't essential.
Day by day
Arrive & gear up
Land, sort rentals, and shake out the legs.
Morning. Arrive and check in; collect rentals and lift passes in town to skip mountain queues.
Afternoon. Easy warm-up laps at Coronet Peak (closest field) or settle in if you're in late.
Evening. Après and dinner in town; check the snow report and cams for tomorrow.
Stay. Central or Frankton base for the week.
Swap: Late arrival? Skip skiing Day 1 and do a town night; start fresh on the mountain Day 2.
Coronet Peak
A full day on the closest, most varied home field.
Morning. First lifts at Coronet Peak; groomers early, then explore the terrain.
Afternoon. Keep skiing, or book a lesson to level up; lunch on the mountain.
Evening. Coronet is famous for night skiing on select evenings — or head to town for après.
Stay. Same base.
Swap: High wind up top? Drop to lower runs or swap to a spa afternoon and ski the evening session.
The Remarkables
Big-mountain scenery and wide bowls.
Morning. Head up the access road to The Remarkables; ride the bowls and take in the views.
Afternoon. Explore the terrain parks and Sugar Bowl; long lunch in the sun if it's clear.
Evening. Quiet dinner in town; rest the legs.
Stay. Same base.
Swap: Whiteout? Swap for a lower-mountain day at Coronet or a rest day (see Day 4).
Rest, town & après
A legs-off day — recover, explore town, and enjoy the winter après scene.
Morning. Sleep in; gondola-top brunch or a lakeside walk.
Afternoon. Spa, shopping, or a Gibbston winery visit — an easy day off the mountain.
Evening. Queenstown's après and nightlife peak in winter — a long dinner, live music, or a lakeside bar.
Stay. Same base.
Swap: Feeling good and the snow's dumping? Skip the rest day and ski instead — keep the rest day in your back pocket.
Best-conditions day & depart
Chase the best snow of the week, then fly out.
Morning. Check the report and cams and ski whichever field is best; morning laps before you pack.
Afternoon. Return gear, grab a final lakeside lunch, and head to the airport (10–15 min from town).
Evening. Depart.
Stay. Check-out day.
Swap: Early flight? Make Day 5 a town-and-brunch morning and take your best ski day earlier in the week.
Where to stay
Central gets you après on foot and easy ski-bus pick-ups; Frankton is better value and closer to the airport and The Remarkables turnoff. See where to stay by area on the accommodation page.
Browse accommodation →Getting around
Ski buses run from town to both fields, so a car is optional. If you drive The Remarkables access road in winter, carry chains and check the road status. See the Getting Around guide.
Getting around guide →What to book first
Lift passes, rentals and ski transport first — especially in the July school holidays. Add lessons early if you want them.
Browse activities →Cost guide
Indicative per person per day: lift pass NZ$120–190, rentals NZ$50–80, ski bus NZ$25–40 return, lessons from NZ$130. Multi-day passes and packages save. Prices change — check the fields.
Variations
Cheaper: Multi-day pass, rent for the week, use the ski bus, and self-cater some nights.
Luxe: Add a heli-ski day, private lessons and a lakefront suite with a hot tub.
Family: Base at Coronet's beginner areas, book kids' lessons, and keep a flexible rest day for tired legs.
No-car: Ski buses cover both fields and airport transfers — you don't need to drive at all.
FAQ
Do I need a car to ski from Queenstown?
No. Ski buses run from central pick-ups to both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. A car adds flexibility but isn't required.
How do I decide which mountain each day?
Check the snow report and webcams each morning and pick the field with the best conditions — the itinerary's days are interchangeable.
When's the best time to ski in Queenstown?
The season typically runs late June to early October, with the most reliable snow from July to September. July school holidays are the busiest — book stays and lift passes early; August often has great late-season conditions with fewer crowds.
