48 Hours in Queenstown - The Perfect Short Break

Two days, one town, more to do than you will manage. Here is how to make the most of a Queenstown weekend without running yourself into the ground.

Two days is not enough for Queenstown. We will say that upfront. But two days done right will convince you to come back, which is sort of the point.

This itinerary assumes you are arriving in the morning and leaving in the evening on day two. Adjust as needed. We have built in time for eating and staring at the lake, because both are important.

Day 1

Morning: Arrive and get your bearings

Drop your bags and walk into town. Queenstown CBD is compact - you can see most of it in 15 minutes on foot. Head to the waterfront and look south across Lake Wakatipu. Those mountains are The Remarkables. You will be staring at them a lot.

Get breakfast at Bespoke Kitchen if it is before 10am. If the queue is long, Vudu Cafe on the waterfront is a solid alternative with a better view.

Late morning: Pick your adrenaline

This is when you do the big activity. Pick one:

  • Kawarau Bridge Bungy ($235) - The original. 43 metres over the river. You will be back in town by lunchtime.
  • Shotover Jet ($179) - 25 minutes of canyon walls and 360-degree spins. Quick, intense, done.
  • Skyline Gondola + Luge ($59) - If you want height without terror. The gondola ride up is scenic, the luge is fun, and the views from Bob's Peak are the best in town.
  • Tandem Skydive ($399) - If you want to go big. Book the first morning slot for the best light.

Lunch

Fergburger. Get it out of the way on day one. The queue moves faster than it looks - usually 15-20 minutes. Order the Big Al (chicken) or the Sweet Bambi (venison). Eat on the waterfront.

If the queue genuinely stretches around the corner, walk two minutes to Devil Burger instead.

Afternoon: Explore on foot

Walk the Queenstown Gardens. The loop around the peninsula takes about 30 minutes and is flat. On a calm day the lake reflections are ridiculous.

Alternatively, drive 20 minutes to Arrowtown. The main street is lined with heritage buildings from the gold rush era. Good for a wander, a coffee, and some light shopping. The Chinese settlement ruins at the end of town are worth seeing.

Evening: Drinks and dinner

Pre-dinner drinks at 1876 (cocktails) or Atlas Beer Cafe (craft beer). Both are central.

Dinner at Rātā for something special ($40-55 mains, book ahead) or Flame Bar & Grill for reliable steaks and waterfront views ($30-45).

After dinner, walk the waterfront. Queenstown at night, with the mountains lit by the last light, is worth seeing.

Day 2

Morning: Go further out

Today is about getting beyond the town centre.

Option A: Milford Sound - If you have a full day and do not mind a long drive (or can book a scenic flight). The coach and cruise ($298) leaves early and returns around 7pm. The scenic flight ($595) is shorter and arguably more dramatic. Option B: Glenorchy and the Dart River - Drive 45 minutes along the lake to Glenorchy. The road is spectacular. Either do the Dart River Wilderness Jet ($299, full day) or just drive there, have coffee at the Glenorchy Cafe, and take in the views. The head of Lake Wakatipu is one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand. Option C: Stay local - Take the TSS Earnslaw steamship to Walter Peak ($79 for the cruise). The 1912 coal-fired ship crosses the lake in about 40 minutes. The high country farm at Walter Peak does a good morning tea or BBQ lunch. Back by early afternoon.

Lunch

Bespoke Kitchen for brunch if you skipped it yesterday. Vudu Cafe for something quick. Patagonia Chocolates if you just want hot chocolate and something sweet.

Afternoon: Fill in the gaps

What you do depends on what you missed:

  • Ride the Skyline Gondola if you have not yet. The Stratosfare Restaurant up top is good for afternoon tea.
  • Do the Ziptrek Ecotours ziplines through the forest ($139, 2-3 hours).
  • Wine tasting in Gibbston Valley - 25 minutes east. Several cellar doors in a row.
  • Or just sit by the lake with a coffee and do nothing. That is allowed.

Evening: Last dinner

Somewhere you have not been yet. Zephyr for small plates, Botswana Butchery for a big steak, or Little Blackwood for lakefront dining.

A final drink at Eichardt's Bar on the waterfront is a good way to end two days.

What to skip

  • Do not try to do Milford Sound AND a full day of activities. Pick one big thing per day.
  • Skip the overpriced souvenir shops on the main strip. If you want merch, the Queenstown Trading Company and some of the Arrowtown shops are better.
  • The waterfront restaurants with huge signs and tourist menus are generally the weakest options. Walk one street back for better food.
