Queenstown is where bungy jumping was born commercially. In 1988, AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch leapt from the Kawarau Bridge and started a global adventure movement. Today, three iconic sites offer wildly different experiences -- from a scenic river bridge to a terrifying canyon cable car.

Kawarau Bridge (43m) -- The Original
The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is the world's first commercial bungy site and a Queenstown landmark. At 43 metres over the vivid turquoise Kawarau River, this is the most iconic jump. You can opt for a water touch (feet only, waist-deep, or full dip). The scenic backdrop makes it endlessly photogenic -- and the spectator gallery means your friends can watch you scream.

Perched above Queenstown on the Skyline gondola complex, the Ledge gives you city views at 47m. Uniquely, you can run, skip, or shuffle off -- the jump style is up to you. The urban backdrop with Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables behind you makes this the most visually dramatic.

The Nevis is not for the faint-hearted. 134 metres above the Nevis River in a remote mountain valley, you free-fall for 8.5 seconds -- the longest bungy drop in New Zealand. Getting there is half the adventure: a 4WD transfer followed by a cable car to a pod suspended over the gorge.

Weight limits: All sites require a minimum of 35kg. The Nevis has a maximum of 235kg. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing -- you'll be upside down. Booking: Book online at least a day in advance, especially in peak summer (Dec--Feb) and winter school holidays (Jul). Walk-ins are possible but risky. The jump: Instructors count you in. Once you're on the platform, commit -- hesitation is your enemy. The freefall lasts 2-3 seconds at Kawarau, 8.5 seconds at Nevis. Photos & video: All sites offer photo/video packages. Your heart will be pounding. The instructors are calm professionals who have seen thousands of jumpers, including plenty of people who "couldn't do it" and then did. The jump itself is over in seconds; the adrenaline lasts hours. Most people say the scariest part is walking to the platform edge.
Getting There
Kawarau is a 20-minute drive from Queenstown (also accessible by shuttle from town). The Ledge is accessed via the Skyline gondola at the top of Brecon Street. The Nevis requires a half-day booking including 4WD transfer -- you can't drive yourself.
