The Drive to Glenorchy
45 kilometres from Queenstown, the road to Glenorchy is one of New Zealand's most spectacular. Following the western shore of Lake Wakatipu through stands of native bush, past mountain reflections and braided river flats, it's the kind of drive that makes people pull over every five minutes to take photos.
Plan 45-90 minutes each way depending on how many times you stop.
Key Stops on the Way
Twelve Mile Delta -- A beautiful beach and swimming spot 12km from Queenstown. Pull off to the right. Flat, shallow entry -- excellent for families in summer. Free. Bennetts Bluff Lookout -- About 20km from Queenstown, a short walk leads to a lookout over the lake with the Forbes Mountains behind. One of the best photo spots on the drive. Bob's Cove -- A sheltered cove with native bush, a short walking track (45 min return), and excellent swimming. Often less crowded than Twelve Mile.Glenorchy Town
A tiny settlement (population ~300) at the head of Lake Wakatipu. There's a hotel, a café, a kayak hire operation, and a sense of being very far from anywhere. The mountain backdrop -- Earnslaw, Chaos, Somnus -- is the defining view of the upper Wakatipu.
Glenorchy Wharf: The classic photo opportunity. Old wooden jetty, mirrored lake, mountains. Best in morning light. Glenorchy Café: Good food, local feel, mountain views. Worth stopping for coffee or lunch.Beyond Glenorchy: Paradise
A further 25km on a gravel road beyond Glenorchy brings you to Paradise -- not a town but a farming valley that feels like the edge of the world. The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film crews used this landscape extensively (it stood in for Isengard and Lothlórien).
What's there: Open farmland, the Dart River, ancient beech forest, and mountains that look designed by a film director. No facilities -- bring your own food and water. 4WD advisable for the last section especially if wet.
