Best Things to Do in Queenstown This Autumn 2026

Autumn in Queenstown is when the locals breathe out. The summer crowds thin, the trees turn gold, and the weather is some of the best of the year.

Autumn (March through May) is arguably the best time to visit Queenstown. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is still warm enough for everything, the autumn colours are spectacular, and accommodation prices drop. Most locals will tell you March-April is their favourite time of year.

The colours

Queenstown and the surrounding basin were planted with deciduous trees during the gold rush era - oaks, poplars, willows, and maples. In late April and early May, they all turn at once. The effect is dramatic.

Best spots for autumn colours:

  • Arrowtown - The main street and the Arrow River trail are peak autumn. Late April is the sweet spot. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival usually runs in late April.
  • Queenstown Gardens - The peninsula loop walk is lined with mature trees that go gold and orange.
  • Lake Hayes - 15 minutes towards Arrowtown. The willows around the lake are classic autumn photography.
  • Gibbston Valley - The vineyards have their own colour change. Wine tasting among autumn vines is about as good as it gets.

Weather

March: Warm days (15-22 C), cool evenings. Perfect hiking weather. Rain is possible but less frequent than in winter.

April: Cooling off (10-17 C). Mornings can be crisp. Still excellent for outdoor activities. First frosts possible late in the month.

May: Properly cool (5-12 C). Snow starts appearing on the mountains. The ski fields are preparing to open. Bring layers.

Daylight shortens through the season - sunset moves from about 7:30pm in March to 5pm in May.

What to do

Hiking

Autumn is the best hiking season. The air is clear, the temperatures are comfortable, and the trails are quieter than summer.

  • Ben Lomond Track - The big one. 6-8 hours return from the Skyline Gondola. Views over the entire Wakatipu Basin from the summit. Take the gondola up to shave off 2 hours.
  • Queenstown Hill - 2-3 hours return. A good workout with views over town and the lake. Start from Belfast Terrace.
  • Bob's Cove Track - 30 minutes easy walking through native bush. 15 minutes drive from town towards Glenorchy. Good for families.
  • Routeburn Track (day section) - Drive to the car park near Glenorchy and walk the first section. You do not need to do the full multi-day tramp to enjoy it.

Wine

Harvest season. The Gibbston Valley wineries are picking grapes in March and April. Some cellar doors offer harvest experiences.

  • Gibbston Valley Winery - Cave cellar tours and tastings. The restaurant is good for lunch.
  • Peregrine - The architecture alone is worth the visit.
  • Chard Farm - Drive carefully, the access road is narrow. The views are dramatic.

Adventure activities

Everything runs year-round in Queenstown. All 25 activities on our listings are available through autumn. The difference is you will often have shorter queues and easier booking.

Best autumn picks:

  • TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak ($79) - The autumn light on the lake crossing is beautiful.
  • Dart River Wilderness Jet ($299) - The beech forests along the Dart River change colour in late April.
  • Tandem Paragliding ($239) - Clear autumn air means better visibility. On a good day you can see Milford Sound from the air.
  • Skyline Gondola and Luge ($59) - Late afternoon rides catch the sunset colours.

Events

  • Arrowtown Autumn Festival - Usually late April. Street performances, food stalls, a market day, and a parade. Check the dates as they shift each year.
  • Queenstown Jazz Festival - Variable dates. When it runs, it brings musicians from across New Zealand.
  • LUMA Light Festival - Check if running. Light installations around the Queenstown Gardens after dark.

What is different from summer

  • Accommodation is cheaper. Hotels and Airbnbs that charge $300-500/night in December can drop to $150-250 in April.
  • Restaurants are easier to book. Walk-ins become possible at places that need reservations in summer.
  • The lake is quieter. Fewer jet skis and boats. The reflections in the morning are sharper.
  • Milford Sound is less crowded. The coach cruises run the same schedule but with fewer people. Rain in Milford is actually good - it creates hundreds of temporary waterfalls down the cliff faces.

What to pack

Layers. An autumn day can start at 5 C, hit 20 C by lunch, and drop again by evening. A decent waterproof jacket, a merino base layer, and sunglasses (the autumn sun is low and bright).

Good walking shoes for trails. Most hiking in Queenstown is on well-maintained tracks but they can be muddy in autumn.
