Queenstown's Four Ski Fields

Within 90 minutes of Queenstown are four ski fields catering to every level -- two operated by NZSki, and two by Cardrona Alpine Resort. Here's how they compare.

Coronet Peak

Distance from Queenstown: 18km (25 min) Altitude: 1649m peak | Skiable area: 280ha | Lifts: 8 Season: June to October (night skiing Friday/Saturday)

The closest field to Queenstown and the most developed. Coronet Peak is primarily intermediate-to-advanced terrain -- blue and black runs dominate. The groomed trails are beautifully maintained and the views down to the Wakatipu Basin are exceptional. Night skiing under lights on Friday and Saturday nights is a genuinely special Queenstown experience.

Best for: Intermediates and above, après-ski crowd, night skiing, convenience

The Remarkables

Distance from Queenstown: 23km via gondola road (45 min) Altitude: 1943m peak | Skiable area: 220ha | Lifts: 7 Season: June to October

More dramatic and rugged than Coronet, The Remarkables sits in a natural granite bowl above Lake Wakatipu. The terrain is more diverse -- beginners have dedicated areas, while Shadow Basin provides serious off-piste challenge for experts. When conditions are good after fresh snow, it's stunning.

Best for: Beginners and families (dedicated learner areas), powder days, dramatic scenery

Cardrona Alpine Resort

Distance from Queenstown: 60km (55 min via Crown Range road) Altitude: 1860m peak | Skiable area: 345ha | Lifts: 7 Season: June to October

Cardrona is the largest field and consistently rated New Zealand's top resort. Wide open groomed runs, well-structured terrain parks, and a purpose-built base village with good food and facilities. The Super Pipe is world-class -- you'll often see Olympians training here.

Best for: Freestyle/park, families, variety-seekers, anyone wanting the full resort experience

Treble Cone

Distance from Queenstown: 100km (1h 30min) Altitude: 2088m peak | Skiable area: 550ha | Lifts: 7 Season: June to October

The biggest vertical drop in New Zealand (700m) and the most challenging terrain. Treble Cone is expert-oriented with long, steep runs and limited beginner terrain. The access road (steep gravel) is part of the adventure.

Best for: Advanced skiers, powder hounds, anyone chasing vertical

Snow Conditions

Getting There

Coronet Peak & The Remarkables: Dedicated ski buses from Queenstown town centre run daily during the season. NZSki buses are comfortable and efficient ($15-25 per person return). Cardrona: Public shuttles available, or drive the Crown Range Road (scenic, about 55 min). Check conditions before driving in winter.

Gear Hire

Full hire (skis, boots, poles or snowboard + boots) costs $60-90/day from ski field rental shops. Town rental shops (Queenstown central) are often cheaper -- pick up the night before and drop off after your day.

Lessons

All four mountains offer ski school from beginner group lessons (~$100 for 2 hours) to private instruction. Book through the ski field directly.
