Freedom camping changes: hearing papers out ahead of 27/10
QLDC has published papers for next week's hearing on proposed changes to its Freedom Camping Bylaw 2025 at three Wānaka sites. Council proposed ending freedom camping at the Allenby Place carpark, stopping it at the Beacon Point Road carpark over December to February, and lifting spaces at the Wānaka Recreation Centre carpark from 18 to 21. Edith Cavell Bridge: short stops 27 to 29/10, full closure 30/10
Downer crews will be working at Edith Cavell Bridge in Arthurs Point next week, felling trees and removing an old concrete block from the bridge abutment. From Tuesday 27/10 to Thursday 29/10, between 7am and 5pm, traffic will be held for up to 10 minutes at a time. On Friday 30/10 the bridge closes fully from 9am to 3pm, opening to let traffic through between 11:30am and 12:30pm. QLDC says the block is thought to date from the bridge's original construction and is coming out as a precaution after routine inspections found it may have moved. Two reserve leases: awaiting minutes from 20/10
On 20/10 QLDC's Community and Environment Committee had two reserve lease reports on its agenda: a new campground lease of Lakeview Lot 9, Cemetery Road, Queenstown, and a new grazing lease on recreation reserve at Spence Road, Lower Shotover. Both reports asked the committee to recommend the leases to the full Council. QLDC has not yet published minutes or a decision, so we do not know the outcome. Two reserve leases go to committee on 20/10
QLDC's Community and Environment Committee meets at 10am on 20/10 at the Lake Wānaka Centre, and two items ask it to recommend leases of recreation reserve to the full Council. The first is a five-year lease of Lakeview Lot 9 (8,250 square metres at 4 Cemetery Road, Queenstown) to Hampshire Holiday Parks for a campground, with up to three one-year renewals at QLDC's discretion. The second is a two-year grazing lease over part of a 14,995 square metre reserve on Spence Road, Lower Shotover, which the Twin Rivers Trail runs through. Long Term Plan 2027 to 2037: where it is up to
QLDC is still drafting its Long Term Plan 2027 to 2037. Councillors and staff are working through it in a series of workshops at the Council Chambers, 10 Gorge Road, and QLDC says most are open to the public in person and recorded for its YouTube channel. Two remain on the published schedule: 29/10 from 1pm to 4pm (refining capital projects, operating spending and financial measures) and 19/11 from 10am to 1pm (a final review of the draft financial and infrastructure strategies, key policies and possible consultation topics). QLDC notes dates can change at short notice. Alongside this, QLDC is reviewing its Revenue and Financing Policy, which sets who pays for council services and how, including whether different types of property should pay different rates. QLDC expects to formally consult on the draft plan and on rating options in March 2027. Feedback from the earlier pre-engagement, which closed on 8/02/2026, is published on Let's Talk.

Council approves 2026 Speed Management Plan
On 27/08/2026 QLDC approved its 2026 Speed Management Plan, which sets new speed limits on roads across the district (Item 1 of the draft minutes). Two limits were changed from staff recommendations: Cemetery Road will be 70km/h, and Glenorchy-Queenstown Road from Bobs Cove to Glenorchy will be 90km/h. Other sections of that road will be 80km/h or 60km/h. Staff said the changes will be brought in in stages. These minutes are still in draft until Council confirms them.

Kawarau Riverside Reserve Management Plan adopted
On 27/08/2026 QLDC adopted the Kawarau Riverside Reserve Management Plan under section 41 of the Reserves Act 1977 (draft minutes, Item 4, Chief Executive's Report). The minutes are still in draft until the Council confirms them.

Short-term rental hosts should pay commercial rates
All Airbnb hosts should be classified as commercial entities and charged commercial rates, rather than residential rates. This would generate revenue for the district and potentially free up properties for long-term rental.
